Construction incomplete in 4 yrs
Aditmari Upazila Fire Station has not started operation as construction of the building is yet to be completed even four years after construction started.
People of the upazila are wondering when the fire station will begin operating. Many fire incidents occurred but the flames could not be extinguished in time due to lack of fire service facilities in the upazila, they said.
Nazibul Islam, 55, of Kamlabari village said they have seen the building being built for the last four years. “We don't know when we will get fire service facilities in our upazila,” he said.
“If there is any fire we have to call Lalmonirhat Sadar and Kaliganj upazila fire stations to extinguish it, but it takes a long time for them to come,” said Mahbubar Ali, 63, of Namuri village.
Lalmonirhat Fire Service acting Deputy Assistant Director Rezaul Karim told this correspondent that the fire service station has not started operating as the building is yet to be handed over to them.
One assiatant officer, two leaders and three firemen were posted to the fire station in January this year, but they are on deputation in other fire stations as the building is still incomplete, he said.
“We have been sending letters to Public Works Division (PWD) authorities for handing over the building. They told us that they will hand it over within this month,” he added.
District PWD Section Officer of the fire station project Khorshed Alam said the project is being implemented at a cost of Tk 1.77 crore and almost all the work of the building is finished except electricity connection.
District PWD Executive Engineer Sakiul Alam told this correspondent that handing over of the building is being delayed due to electricity connection problem.
“A transformer has already been purchased and Rural Electricity Board will install it as early as possible,” he said. He hoped that operation of the fire service station will start within this month.
