Murad’s wife files GD against him alleging torture

Wife of disgraced state minister for information and broadcasting, Murad Hassan, has filed a general diary (GD) against him, alleging torture and abuse.

Dr Jahanara Ehsan lodged the GD with Dhanmondi Police Station today, Sub-Inspector Ansar Ali told The Daily Star.

Dr Jahanara called the emergency number 999 and sought police assistance, saying her husband, Murad Hassan, was about to beat her up, SI Ansar said.

Receiving the phone call, a 10-member team of Dhanmondi police rushed to Murad's house at Dhanmondi Road 15 in Dhaka.

In the GD, Dr Jahanara said she married to Murad for 19 years ago and they have two children in their family.

"Recently, he [Murad], has been torturing me physically and mentally. He has been using abusive language on me and the children, and also threatened to kill me. Around 2:45pm, when he was about to beat me up again, I called 999," she mentioned in the GD.

Talking to The Daily Star at Dhanmondi Police Station, Dr Jahanara said Murad left his Dhanmondi house 30 minutes before the police reached there.

"He didn't come to home after his return from Canada. He came here around eight to 10 days ago and started torturing me," she told The Daily Star.

The children, aged 11 and 16, who were also at the police station today, acknowledged the torture on their mother.

Earlier on December 7, Dr Murad Hasan resigned from the cabinet after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked him to step down for his offensive and derogatory remarks on women that sparked waves of criticism.

Murad Hassan left the country for Canada on early December 10. However, Canada's Border Services Agency did not allow him to enter the country. Then he returned to Dhaka on December 12, after failing to enter Canada and the UAE.
