Jamaat secretary shown arrested in 2018 arson case

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar was shown arrested today in an arson case filed with Paltan Model Police Station in November 2018.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order after Md Forman Ali, an inspector of Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted an application in this regard.

The IO also submitted another petition for placing the Jamaat leader on a 10-day remand for quizzing him about the incident.

The magistrate, however, fixed May 7 for hearing on the remand prayer in presence of the accused in the case.

According to the case statement, on November 14, 2018, over 10,000 leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami brought out a procession with banners and festoons before buying nomination papers for parliament election.

They also blocked the road at Nayapaltan and held a rally. Being obstructed, they pelted brick chunks and threw crude bombs at policemen that left some policemen injured.

Following the incident, police filed a case with Paltan Police Station under the Explosive Substances Act.

On September 6, 2021, police arrested nine people, including Parwar from a flat in Block-D of Dhaka's Bashundhara residential area. Police then filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Bhatara Police Station the same night.
