Prof Faiz to quit as DU VC
Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof SMA Faiz decided to step down and requested the education ministry to take necessary steps in this regard.
Prof Faiz yesterday confirmed The Daily Star that he tendered a letter to the education secretary yesterday afternoon.
"There was no fear or pressure behind my decision", Prof Faiz said replying to a query and added: “Existing problems at the university can be solved; it only needs time.”
The posts of 35 teachers' representatives and that of 25 registered graduates' are now vacant in the existing senate of the university. It would require at least three months to hold elections to these two categories, said the VC.
“Given the present situation I think it would be proper for the next Vice Chancellor to take necessary steps about the senate election,” Prof Faiz told The Daily Star.
Expressing his deep regard to the government's stern stance on trouble monger or those who takes to violence Prof Faiz said, "I have full confidence in the Prime Minister's speech and feel that the prevailing crisis at the university can be solved".
Prof Faiz, however, said he would work with full responsibility till he holds the post of the Vice Chancellor.
Prof Faiz took over on May 23, 2002 and his tenure ended on May 30 last year.
However, according to the section 11 (2) of DU Order, 1973, President Iajuddin Ahmed, also the Chancellor of the university, entrusted Prof Faiz with the task of VC temporarily until a VC was appointed from a three-member panel through an election by the university senate.
The circular that bestowed the task of VC upon Prof Faiz came into effect from May 31 last year.
"Having completed election to the posts of deans held on August 19 last year, I initiated to hold the elections to the 35 teachers' representative posts in senate but a section of teachers then requested me to hold the election after parliamentary polls,” Prof Faiz added.
