Supporters of two UP chairmen clash
A clash erupted over a trifle issue yesterday between the supporters of two Union Parishad (UP) chairmen at Garaganj Bazar in Shailkupa upazila, police said.
Earlier, a quarrel ensued over paying a torn two taka note to the owner of a photo copier shop at the bazar on Wednesday.
Alam Mollah, younger brother of Umedpur UP chairman Sabdar Hossain Mollah, made a copy of his document from the shop owned by Prof Jahid Hossain at the bazar on Wednesday evening. Alam Mollah gave a torn two taka note to the owner which led to an altercation between the two. Alam Mollah left the spot after a while.
Yesterday morning, supporters of UP chairman Sabdar Hossain, equipped with lethal weapons, assembled at Garaganj Bazar and attacked Jahid's house. They also vandalised seven shops and three coaching centres at the bazar.
Jahid, a supporter of Mirzapur UP chairman Feroz Ahmed, informed the chairman of the matter. Feroz Ahmed's men, equipped with lethal weapons, came to the bazar and swooped on chairman Sabdar Hossain's men.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, Shailkupa police station officer-in-charge (OC) Ahsan Habib said.
Another clash occurred between two groups of people at Shiddi village in the same upazila yesterday over building a road on agricultural land.
Contacted, Shailkupa OC said that the villagers got divided into two groups over the issue and locked in a clash in the morning.
During the clash, 10 people from both sides injured. The injured are Muktar Hossain, Rina Khatun, Laltu Mia, Masud Hossain, Chhhobi Begum, Injal Hossain, China Khatun, Sohel Ahmed, Shukur Ali and Mizanur Rahman. Eight of them are undergoing treatment at Shailkupa health complex.
Later, Mizanur Rahman of Muktar group was referred to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
