A regional leader of outlawed Biplobi Communist Party (BCP) was killed in a shootout with police at Isalmari village in Mirpur upazila early yesterday. The dead was identified as Amirul Islam alias Rulu, 48, of the village. Police said Rulu was a regional leader of BCP and accused in about dozens cases including seven for murder. He was also a listed criminal in Mirpur upazila, police said. Police said, acting on a tip-off that Rulu was holding a secret meeting at Isalmari field, a team of Mirpur police station cordoned the area at about 3:30 am and asked the alleged BCP men to surrender. But they opened fire, prompting police to retaliate. Hit by a bullet during a shootout, Ruhul died on the spot while his accomplices fled away, police said. Two constables----Salam and Humayan-- were also injured in the incident, police said. Later police recovered a shutter gun and four bullets from the spot.
