Stand by cyclone-affected people

President urges university authorities

President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday called upon university authorities to stand by the cyclone-affected people with dry foods, drinking water, medicines and warm clothes at this time of prime need. He made the appeal when 10 vice-chancellors of public universities called on him at Bangabhaban, two days after the president had a spot view of the devastation done by the twister Sidr. Narrating the untold sufferings of cyclone-hit people in the coastal areas, the president asked the university authorities to extend their “utmost cooperation and sincere efforts with the sense of humanity”. Iajuddin sought all-out cooperation from the VCs in overcome this situation, said President's Press Secretary Abdul Awal Hawlader while briefing newsmen at Bangabhaban after the meeting. The VCs apprised the president that they would provide all-out support and cooperation in mitigating the plight of the cyclone-affected people. They assured the president of supplying relief materials like ready-to-eat food, water purification tablets and warm clothes from today. The university authorities will carry the relief supplies to the old airport at Tejgaon wherefrom the goods would be airlifted by helicopters to the affected areas. National University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Wakil Ahmed told the president that all the affiliated colleges under NU would take part in this activity on their own arrangement. The VCs suggested setting up a coordination body based in Bangabhaban to coordinate overall relief activities. Later, the meeting decided that Military Secretary to the President Maj Gen Amirul Karim would coordinate the activities. Dhaka University VC Prof SMA Faiz, Buet VC Dr AMM Shafiullah, Jahangirnagar University VC Prof Dr Khandokar Mustahidur Rahman, Open University VC Dr Farid Ahmed, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) VC Prof Dr Mohammad Tahir, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University VC Prof Dr Lutfor Rahman Khan, Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (Duet)'s Prof Dr M Anwarul Azim, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University VC Prof Dr AM Faruk and Jagannath University VC Prof Dr AKM Sirajul Islam Khan attended the meeting.
