Azizul Haque Islamabadi, organising secretary of Hefajat's now-dissolved committee, was shown arrested today in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over March 26 violence centring the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Metropolitan Magistrate Debdash Chandra Adhikary passed the order virtually after Md Shamim Hossain, a sub-inspector of Paltan Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a petition in this regard.
Before passing the order, the magistrate sent a virtual link to the jail authorities who are custodians of the accused.
On April 11, Rapid Action Battalion arrested Azizul from Baluchora area of Chattogram's Hathazari upazila.
On the same day, he was placed on a 14-day remand in three other cases filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem and the recent violence in protest against the visit of Narendra Modi.
After completion of his 14-day remand, he was earlier sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.
He was also shown arrested in six others cases filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.
Azizul along with other FIR-named accused gathered at Motijheel Shapla Chatter and different places in Dhaka and started vandalising different institutions, torching vehicles, preventing policemen from discharging their duties and attacking them with bombs on May 5 in 2013, police said.
