The High Court today questioned the legality of allocating 912 plots at Purbachal New Town Project in Gazipur on charge of irregularities and corruption.

The court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) and government to explain in four weeks why the list of 912 persons who were allocated plots at Purbachal New Town Project in Gazipur part should not be declared illegal.

The HC also ordered the Rajuk chairman to prepare a list of residents of the area who were affected due to the allocation in 30 days.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir came up with the rule and order following a writ petition filed by 53 affected people challenging the legality of allocating 912 plots in the project.

Petitioners' lawyer Sazzad-Ul Islam told The Daily Star that Rajuk on December 20 last year published a list of 912 persons, who were allocated plots at Purbachal New Town Project.

After examining the list, the writ petitioners have found that the allocations were made through corruption, nepotism, and in violation of the conditions mentioned in the advertisement circulated by Rajuk in 2019.

Among the 912, around 200 people's applications were found to be fake and faulty and 15 to 16 persons are government employees who are not inhabitants of the area, he said.

Deputy Attorney General Arobindu Kumar Roy represented the state.
