India will do everything possible to help fight coronavirus: Modi
India will do everything possible to help the humanity's fight against Covid-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted today.
"We shall win this together," PM Modi said in the tweet.
Modi was responding to a tweet from US President Donald Trump who expressed his gratitude for India's decision to supply hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug that is said to hold the key to cure coronavirus patients.
In a series of tweets, Modi said the India-US partnership is stronger than ever, our New Delhi correspondent reports.
Reciprocating to the US president, the prime minister said, "The India-US Partnership is stronger than ever. India shall do everything possible to help humanity. We shall win this together."
Earlier, thanking India and Modi, the American president tweeted, "India's help during this crisis will not be forgotten. Extraordinary times require even closer cooperation between friends. Thank you, India and the Indian people for the decision on HCQ. Will not be forgotten! Thank you Prime Minister @NarendraModi for your strong leadership in helping not just India, but humanity, in this fight!"
He later described PM Modi as "terrific" for allowing the export of hydroxychloroquine.
India, the largest producer of hydroxychloroquine, agreed to lift the ban on the export of the medicine to the US after Trump spoke to Modi on phone last week.
On Wednesday, Trump confirmed that the first shipment of a total of 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine was on its way from three factories in Gujarat -- Modi's home state -- to the United States.
More than 30 countries, including Nepal and Sri Lanka, have requested India for supply of hydroxychloroquine.
