Covid-19 spreads in new areas of India but 82% of total cases from 10 states, union territories
Covid-19 infections have spread to newer areas across India but 82 percent of the total number of cases are limited to ten states and federally-ruled territories, the country's health ministry said today.
Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan told the media in New Delhi that 50 districts accounted for 66 percent of the total caseload and the Covid-19 case fatality rate has progressively declined to 2.10 percent, the lowest since lockdown was first imposed on March 25.
"Coronavirus infection has spread to newer areas but 82 percent of the total cases are still limited to 10 states and union territories in the country whereas 50 districts today account for 66 percent of the Covid-19 caseload in the country," he said.
Nearly 68 percent of Covid-19 deaths were reported among male patients, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting Bhushan.
In terms of age, he said 50 percent of such deaths happened in the age group of 60 years and above.
"About 37 percent of Covid-19 deaths in India took place in the age group of 45 to 60 years, while 11 percent of deaths were recorded in the age group of 26 to 44 years," he said.
Bhushan said the total number of recovered cases at 12.30 lakh is twice the number of active cases.
He said 28 states and federally-ruled territories have a Covid-19 positivity rate of less than 10 percent while India's national positivity rate is 8.89 percent.
Active Covid-19 cases stand at 5,86,298, while 12,30,509 people have recovered.
India's total Covid-19 cases went up to 18,55,745 today with the addition of a single-day spike of 52,050 in the last 24 hours, according to Health Ministry update.
The Covidd-19 death toll rose to 38,938 with 803 new fatalities, the update said.
