Covid-19: Spike in new cases over 24 hours continues in India

India recorded the biggest single-day jump in the number of coronavirus cases with 6,767 new patients in the last 24 hours.

This is the third consecutive day that India has reported a record number of new patients each day.

According to the Health Ministry figures this morning, India has logged 1,31,868 cases and 3,867 deaths linked to the contagion since the pandemic began in February. Of them, 147 patients died in the last 24 hours.

India has reported a record number of new cases on five days this week after the nationwide lockdown was relaxed in several parts on May 15.

While 5,242 cases were registered on May 18, 5,611 were reported on Wednesday, 6,088 cases on Friday and 6,654 cases were registered on Saturday.

Maharashtra state has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country with more than 47,190 reported so far and more than 1,500 having died. In Tamil Nadu, 14,753 cases have been reported and 98 patients have died so far.

The latest spike in cases came from 11 municipal areas across seven states which have 70 percent of the total number of coronavirus cases.

These 11 municipal areas are in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan, the Health Ministry said.
