Know your deshi ‘superfoods’: Chirata
Chirata or Swertia chirayita (Gentianaceae) is a popular medicinal herb, native to regions of temperate Himalayas. The shrubs can be two-three feet long.
Almost all parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine for centuries due to their benefits.
The bitter-tasting parts of the plant contain a chemical which helps to reduce inflammation. It has been used to treat malaria in the sub-continent for a long time.
Chirata water helps in weight loss as it increases metabolism. It is also beneficial in managing diabetes due to its high antioxidant property.
The herb is also known to be beneficial for the kidney as it may help prevent stone formation and can protect the organ from being damaged by free radicals.
It can provide relief in constipation and upset stomach and can also help with loss of appetite. Many even use it to treat intestinal worms.
Chirata paste is useful in managing skin problems including acne and its powder can reduce the redness and inflammation of the skin and prevent infections.
Using Chirata has not been associated with any downsides on record. However, too much of its use is not recommended.
Its use should also not replace treatment by medical professionals.
