Agreement signed to boost collaboration on diabetes, NCD prevention

The Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR) of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) and the Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen collaboration on diabetes and non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention, research and public health.

The agreement is expected to create opportunities for cooperation between Bangladesh and OIC member states in scientific research, capacity building, technological innovation and public health, according to a press release of BADAS today.

Prof M Iqbal Choudhary, coordinator general of COMSTECH, and National Professor Dr AK Azad Khan, president of BADAS, signed the MoU recently.

Under the agreement, BADAS and COMSTECH will work together to promote the exchange of scientific knowledge, technological innovations and public health expertise,

The partnership will also focus on developing effective and scalable models for diabetes prevention and control that could serve as best-practice examples for OIC member states.

As part of the collaboration, an international event titled “Dissemination of the Faith-Based Diabetes Prevention Programme in Bangladesh and the Dhaka Declaration” will be held in Dhaka on August 6.

The event is expected to bring together national and international experts, policymakers, healthcare professionals, religious leaders and representatives of government and international organisations to showcase Bangladesh's initiatives in diabetes prevention and health promotion.

The partnership marks a significant step towards promoting science, research, innovation and international cooperation to address diabetes and other NCDs, the release said.
