Villagers in Kurigram put up bamboo wall to control water flow of Brahmaputra River
Villagers in Kurigram are putting up a 50-meter bamboo wall to control the flow of water in the Brahmaputra River to save their village Durgam Porar Char from flooding.
The people of Porar Char, a remote area on the banks of the Brahmaputra River at Jatrapur union in Sadar upazila have been building piling the bamboo sticks into the riverbed since Friday (July 1, 2022), our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports.
Around 85 families of the Char have contributed Tk 200-500 each to build the bamboo wall.
Rashed Islam (46), who took up the initiative for the bamboo wall, said that they are doing this to interrupt the flow of river water and will cost Tk 30,000 to Tk 35,000.
An appeal was made to the local public representative but no response was received. So, they are doing this work with their own donations, he added.
"Once the bamboo piling is done, the flow of water will be interrupted and the village will be protected," Rashed said.
Habibur Rahman (50), a local, said they are all working together on the bamboo piling. "Everyone in this char has been affected by the flood. So, everyone has come forward to implement the initiative," he said.
Another local Rahmat Ali said, "It is being made with the efforts of everyone. The local representatives are not providing any assistance in this regard."
Abdul Gafur, chairman of Jatrapur UP, said that no one had come to him to build a bamboo wall and he did not know the matter. Since the people of the village have taken such an initiative, he will stand by them, he said.
