Drivers of economy

Editor’s Note

Dear Readers

It is our great pleasure to launch yet another colourful, well-illustrated 232-page special supplement series on the occasion of the 26th Anniversary of The Daily Star. The series, themed Building Blocks of Tomorrow, will appear in five segments. The first, which appears today, is titled Drivers of Economy; the second, Living and Lifestyle, will appear on February 24; the third, From Education to Employment, on February 25; the fourth, Environment and Climate Action, on February 26, while the concluding part, Towards a Just and Inclusive Society will reach you on the morning of February 27.

The idea behind the main theme of the supplement is stimulated by the national development agenda based on the achievements and the experiences gained in the journey towards the objectives of the MDGs and recast in the form of the seventeen SDGs. The idea is to take a look at the tasks and challenges to be accomplished and encountered, for us to become a middle income country. And the entire gamut of our existence, from issues that spur growth and drive our economy to education and development without harming the environment or our natural resources, and how all these influence our life and livelihood, have been covered in the supplements.

It is also our great pleasure to say that the contributors, who are experts, practitioners, researchers, eminent economists, scholars and academics, have done a commendable job in presenting us with a crop of very insightful and rich articles. And a group of creative and innovative younger men and women have enriched the supplements breathing fresh air into them. We are grateful to all of them.

We have tried to make the contents rich, interesting, objective, constructive and positively directional with appropriate suggestions and recommendations which we are confident will add value to the existing works on the topics covered in the supplements.

We also take the opportunity of expressing gratitude to our readers and patrons who have kept company with us and have shown keen interest in our continuing progress and lent unstinted support in fulfilling our motto, Your Right to Know.

As always, we have tried to be reader-friendly in our style and presentation. We wish you a very joyful and enlightening reading.
