Worker dies at shipbreaking yard owned by lawmaker in Ctg
A foreman died at Tasin Steel Shipbreaking yard in Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila early today.
The deceased was identified as Ripon Mia (37) hailing from Mymensingh district.
Shuvankar Dutta, Inspector of Directorate of Factory Inspection, Chattogram told The Daily Star that a worker died at Tasin Steel Shipbreaking Yard. As Friday is a holiday, we will inspect the factory on Saturday.
On condition of anonymity, a colleague of the victim, told The Daily Star that Ripon Mia was supervising work on the ship at midnight when a huge chunk of iron sheet fell down upon him leaving him dead on the spot, he added.
The yard is owned by Didraul Alam, lawmaker from Chatogram-4, Sitakunda constituency of Chattogram. Our correspondent contacted lawmaker Didarul Alam who told The Daily Star that the worker died after he was hit by an iron sheet.
He also said sometimes incidents like this happen in spite of their efforts to save workers from accidents.
