Stepfather detained for rape, murder of 3-year-old in Dhaka’s Korail slum
A man allegedly raped and killed his three-year-old stepdaughter at Korail slum in Dhaka's Mohakhali this morning.
Police detained the man, who married the child's mother seven months back.
The accused rapist took the baby to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 10:30am in unconscious state where doctors declared her dead.
Police detained him as hospital staffers told law enforcers that there were injury marks on the baby's cheek and private parts, though the man initially claimed that the child died after falling from stairs, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police outpost, said.
Police are interrogating him.
Victim's mother said the child was the youngest among her three children. She used to live in the slum with the girl while her sons live in their grandmother's house in Habiganj.
Seven months ago, she married the man, a restaurant worker who was not regular at work. He did not bear family expenses and used to argue with her often.
"Today I went to a relative's house after a quarrel when my baby was fine. After a while, as I called my husband to enquire about my daughter, he told me that she fell from the stairs… My husband killed my baby," she alleged.
The mother said she would file a case against her husband.
Nur-E-Azam Mia, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station, said they primarily suspect that the stepfather raped and killed the child.
"We are investigating it," he said.
