Police arrest 9 Jamaat, Hefajat men from secret meeting in Lalmonirhat
Police have arrested nine leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e-Islam while they were holding a secret meeting in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.
They were arrested from a house in Kashiram Munsir Bazar area of Tushbhandar union in the upazila around 10:30pm last night, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting Arju Md Sazzad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station.
Police also recovered some books on extremism, leaflets and receipts for fund collection from them on the spot, the OC said, adding that a case has been filed with the Kaliganj Police Station in this connection.
The arrestees are identified as: Tushbhandar union Jamaat-e-Islami Amir (president) Mozammel Haque (55); three Jamaat activists -- Shaheen Islam (38), Abu Bakkar (70), and Nazrul Islam (58); local Hefajat-e-Islam leader Fuad Hossain (43); and four Hefajat activists -- Sabu Miah (50), Shahidul Islam (40), Iman Ali (30), and Abu Sayeed (30).
According to police, on information that several leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e-Islam were holding a secret meeting at the house of Jamaat activist Abu Bakkar in the area on Tuesday night, the law enforcers raided the house and arrested the nine, while some other leaders and activists managed to flee from the scene.
The arrestees were being interrogated at the police station to find out the reason of their secret meeting and who else were present, OC Arju added.
