Journalist who covered Mamunul incident in hospital after assault by ‘Hefajat men’
A journalist, who covered Hefajat-e-Islam central committee's Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque's confinement at a resort in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila, was undergoing treatment in hospital yesterday after being assaulted by people he said were local Hefajat activists.
Habibur Rahman (40), Sonargaon correspondent of a private television channel named Channel S, also alleged in the written complaint filed with Sonargaon Police Station last night that the Hefajat men also vandalised his residence.
He is currently undergoing treatment at Sonargaon upazila health complex, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Jayedul Alam, superintendent of police of Narayanganj, said they have got the complaint and filing of a case is underway.
Steps would be taken after investigation, he added.
In the complaint, Habibur said Hefajat leader Mamunul Haque was confined by locals along with a woman at Sonargaon Royal Resort on April 3.
During the confinement, some journalists went live from their personal Facebook accounts and asked Mamunul several questions, it said.
An allegation arose that Habibur had grabbed Mamunul's beard and since then Hefajat leaders and activists have been threatening the journalist, the complaint said.
Early on Tuesday morning, while the journalist was sleeping at his residence at Bhatirchar village, Hefajat leaders and activists attacked the house, dragged him out and asked him to apologise to Mamunul on Facebook Live.
When Habibur declined, he was beaten up badly in several phases, the complaint reads.
