Imported liquor seized while being smuggled at Ctg port, 2 held
Chattogram Customs House authority seized 240 bottles of foreign liquor and beer cans from a private car with a sticker of Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) last night.
During the incident, two alleged smugglers were also detained, said the customs house sources.
Customs Authority today formed a five-member investigation committee over the incident, M Fakhrul Alam, commissioner of customs house told The Daily Star.
Customs officials hand over the two detainees-- Monto Chandra Das and Masud Rana-- to Bandar Police station. Officials also seized the private car (Chatto Metro- Ga-12-1804) and a CNG-run auto rickshaw ( Chatto Metro- Tha-12-4112).
AKM Sultan Mahamud, deputy commissioner of customx told The Daily Star, "A private car with a sticker saying 'PILOT DUTY of Ctg Port Authority' was parked behind the customs house around 10:00pm yesterday. Noticing its suspicious movement, the on-duty Ansar members intercepted the driver which is when he tried to flee the scene with the car but the Ansar men held him by closing the main entrance. After searching the private car, 219 beer cans and 21 bottles of different foreign liquors and a walkie talkie were recovered."
Customs house commissioner M Fakhrul Alam also said, "The port authorities search every vehicle before it enters and exits the port."
Omar Farook, Port sectary of CPA told The Daily Star, "The vehicle seized is not a port vehicle. Such vehicles with stickers are used by various port contractors and users. However, it is being investigated whether the vehicle came out of the port or some other place."
