Police have arrested an imam of a mosque on charges of raping a six-year-old child at Kalia upazila of Narail.

The arrestee was identified as Hafez Abdur Rahman (20), an imam of Nidhipur Uttarpara Jame Mosque, reports our Bagerhat correspondent quoting Roksana Khatun, officer-in-charge of Naragati Police Station.

The incident took place yesterday.

The imam was shown arrested after a case was filed by the victim's father with Naragati police station this morning, said the OC.

According to the case document, Imam Abdur Rahman has been running a Maktab (A centre for teaching Arabic) in the mosque after Fajr prayers.

Like every other day, the child, went to the Maktab with other children yesterday morning.

Imam Abdur Rahman took the six-year-old to his residence in the name of private tutoring and raped her there.

The child went home and informed his parents about the incident. They along with other villagers caught him and handed him over to the Naragati police.           

The following day, the victim's father filed a case against Abdur Rahman at Naragati Police Station.

OC Roksana Khatun said Abdur Rahman was produced before a court today.
