Former employee of Kushtia election office sent to jail over NID forgery
A court in Kushtia sent a former office assistant of the district election office to jail last evening in connection with National Identity Card (NID) forgery case.
Kushtia's Additional Chief Judicial Court sent Anisur Rahman to jail after he gave confessional statement before it under the Section 164, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
On June 3, a team of Criminal Investigation Department of Kushtia arrested Anis from Pabna district, said Additional Superintendent of CID Abul Hossain.
Later, he was brought to Kushtia and after an interrogation, he was produced before court yesterday.
Anis, who is currently working as an office assistant in Pabna's EC office, was an office assistant in Kushtia election office at the time of the incident and CID, while investigating the case, found evidence of his involvement with the forgery, the CID official said.
Mahibul Islam, a businessman who was identified as mastermind of the forgery, local Jubo League leader Ashrafuzzaman Sujan and seven others are currently in jail in connection with the case, he added.
A gang made fake NID cards of MMA Wadud, a resident of Kushita town, and his family members to grab Wadud's property. Later, the property was sold to Mahibul using the fake NID cards, Abul said.
When it came to light, Police filed a case with Kushtia Model Police Station on September 3 last year against 16 named people including some local politicians.
Then, the Election Commission launched an investigation and found evidence that four officials and a staffer of Kushtia District Election Office were involved in the forgery.
Then, Anisur Rahman, senior election officer of the district, filed another case with Kushtia Model Police Station on March 4.
Deputy Secretary of Dhaka Election Commission Secretariat (former senior district election officer) Nawabul Islam; Additional Regional Election Officer of Faridpur (former Kushtia Sadar upazila election officer) Ziaur Rahman; Upazila Election Officer of Magura Sadar (former Kushtia Sadar upazila election officer) Amit Kumar Das; and Kushtia Sadar Upazila Election Office Assistant and Computer Typist GM Sadiq are among the accused.
Kushtia Sadar Upazila Election Officer (former Kumarkhali upazila election officer) Samiul Alam was sued in the other case filed under the Penal Code and Digital Security Act, 2018.
The plaintiff said the accused are currently barred from discharging their official duties.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the third case in connection with the forgery, the CID official said.
