Five, including acting chief, of Allah’r Dal arrested in Dhaka: police
Anti-terrorism Unit claimed to have arrested five leaders including acting chief of the banned militant group Allah'r Dal from Dhaka's Farmgate and Mohammadpur areas yesterday.
The arrestees are: Sheikh Kamal, 35, the second-in-command of the group; Sohel Rana, 40; Robi Ahmed Pappu, 37; Khalekuzzaman, 37; and Moniruzzaman Milon, 42.
Kamal had been discharging the responsibility of acting chief as some top leaders including chief Matin Mehedi are now behind bar, MM Hasanul Zahid, superintendent of police (Intelligence) in ATU, told The Daily Star.
Kamal joined the militant outfit in 2004 through Matin. Then, he had discharged organisational duties in Khulna, Gaibandha region and in the central committee, the SP said.
Khalekuzzaman got involved in militancy in 2000, also through Matin. He was the chief of the outfit's Dhaka district unit since 2017 while Moniruzzaman was a nephew and close aide of Matin.
Sohel joined the outfit in 2018 and his job was to communicate with fellow militants in jails, help them in case proceedings and look after their family members, Zahid said.
Robi was the chief of the group's Gazipur unit.
The arrestees claimed that there are more than 25,000 members, supporters and sympathisers across the country and they had long been recruiting fresh operatives, collecting funds from many of them, ATU officials said.
A case was filed with Tejgaon Police Station under Anti-Terrorism Act in this regard.
