Writ seeks end to transport strike in 24hrs
A rights group today filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of the ongoing transport strike and seeking necessary order to stop the impasse within 24 hours.
The writ was placed in public interest and prays for an order on the government to curb or seize the licenses of strikers if they do not withdraw the strike.

The organisation also requested the court to issue a rule asking the authorities to explain why the enforcement of transport strike against a court verdict should not be declared illegal.

The High Court may hold hearing on the petition later in the day.
Yesterday, transport workers took their protests to a bigger scale protesting conviction of two fellow drivers and leaving commuters stranded in Dhaka and all over the country.
The death conviction of a trucker in Dhaka the day before yesterday fueled the transport workers who were already on strike in Khulna division and helped it spread countrywide.

In Manikganj on February 22, a court awarded life for a trucker convicting him of killing eminent filmmaker Tareque Masud and media Peronality Mishuk Munier in a road crash.
A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced a trucker to death in a case filed over a road accident in Savar in 2003– after which, the transport workers took their protests countrywide.
