SUST students hold demo, lock down VC's residence demanding reopening of halls
Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology today demonstrated and locked down the university vice-chancellor's residence for hours to press home their demand for reopening of the halls, which have been closed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
More than a hundred students gathered on the campus in the afternoon, had a meeting and started their demonstration to press for their demand.
Later, around 8:00pm, they locked down the main entrance of the SUST VC's residential complex, and reopened it at around 10:00pm.
They also gave a three-day ultimatum to the vice-chancellor to reopen the halls by February 23.
With Masters and Honours final year examinations being in progress in the university while the examinations of all other semesters scheduled to begin from March, hundreds of students have already come to Sylhet to prepare for the examinations and are having to stay at private messes, a student told The Daily Star wishing anonymity.
Professor Dr Rashed Talukder, director of Students Counselling and Guidance of SUST, said, "We're planning to reopen all dormitories a week before the exam but the students want them open now. We're having discussion with the students and higher authorities to decide in this regard."
