Abdul Wares, 40, a sub inspector of Kawnia Police Station, has been sued under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, five days after the rescue of his tortured second wife Habiba Aktar Marufa, 14, from his locked house in front of the police station.

Mahmuda Begum, mother of Habiba, also a Class VIII student, lodged the case on Tuesday night, said Muhammad Selim Reza, officer in charge of Kawnia Police Station.

Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association and rights activists continued initiative in this regard since Thursday while the victim appearing at an International Women's Day celebration programme at Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city appealed for security on Sunday, and the district administration's law and order review meeting discussed the matter on Tuesday noon, sources said.

Victim Habiba was handed over to the shelter home for tortured female victims under women affairs directorate on Sunday afternoon, said advocate Munira Begum, divisional head of Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association.

"Accused Abdul Wares has been closed to the police lines and departmental investigation is going on. After lodging a case, the accused would be suspended and arrested to face trial," Shahnaj Begum, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP), also in charge of the victim support centre of BMP, said earlier.

Physically tortured for dowry by her husband Wares, Habiba was treated at Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital from June 12 to 16 last year, said the victim's mother Mahmuda Begum. She also showed documents of the treatment.

Right activists have demanded exemplary punishment of the police official accused of torturing woman, marrying a minor aged girl, and taking a second wife by concealing facts.
