Robbers wearing PPEs and brandishing "toy guns" looted Tk 8.7 lakh from a branch of Sonali Bank in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga in broad daylight today.
Three people wearing helmets and personal protectitve equipment (PPE) stormed into the Uthli branch of the bank and shut down the bank door around 1:00pm, Jahidul Islam, superintendent of police in Chuadanga, said quoting branch manager Abu Bakar Siddiqui.
The trio stabbed a security guard and held all the officers, employees, guards and clients hostage at gunpoint. They then proceeded to loot around Tk 8,72,000, he said.
The robbers also forced the officials at gun point to open the bank vault but could not loot it as people began shouting for help. The three then fled the spot, the SP quoted the branch manager as saying.
Meanwhile, SP Jahidul Islam, who visited the spot, said the miscreants brandished "toy guns" during the robbery. "We have recovered parts of the toy arms left on the spot," he told our Kushtia correspondent over phone.
After the incident, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the district police conducted a raid but no one was arrested till 5:00pm in connection with the incident, the SP said adding an operation is underway to nab the criminals.
High officials, including Additional Deputy Inspector General of police in Khulna Nahidul Islam, also visited the spot.
