Bedridden female FF in need of treatment
Freedom fighter Vanu Nesa, now bedridden at her Tetulia village home in Pabna’s Santhia upazila due to old age complications, is in dire need of quality medical treatment.
Hard-pressed family members of Vanu, 80, the lone woman freedom fighter of Pabna (according to the official list), have sought government support to relieve her pain.
“My mother got paralysed and bed-ridden six months ago. She is unable to stand or sit alone. She cannot even speak. Her condition is deteriorating as we cannot arrange good treatment for her,” Vanu’s son Md Eunus Ali told journalists last week.
Vanu Nesa carried different materials including bullets for freedom fighters at bunkers, according to the local freedom fighters.
While carrying ammunition for freedom fighters, she was bullet-hit during an encounter with Pakistani occupation forces at Jorgasa village in mid-December of 1971, they said.
She now lives with her two sons and their families at a shabby cottage built on a 22-decimal khas land given by the government.
Freedom fighter’s allowance from the government is the means of her survival while her sons do manual labour for livelihood.
“My mother took part in the Liberation War against the Pakistan occupation army, defying life risk. But now she is passing days amid sufferings,” said Md Shahidul Islam, her another son.
“Freedom fighters of Santhia will never forget her role during the Liberation War. We demand better treatment for her,” said Abdul Latif, former commander of Santhia upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad.
Contacted, Santhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Jamal Ahmed said, “I have visited Vanu Nesa at her house and provided some financial support. If needed, we will take initiative for her better treatment.”
