5 to die for killing ex-UP member
A Manikganj court yesterday sentenced five people to death in connection with a case for killing a former union parishad (UP) member in Ghior upazila in 2013.
The convicts are Manjur Rahman, 30, Moazzem Hossain, 38, Babul Mia, 39, Azizul Haque, 25, and Feli Begum, 21. They all hail from Fulhara village in the upazila.
After examining 14 witnesses, Manikganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Shahana Haque Siddika handed down the verdict in presence of all the accused around 12:30pm.
The court also acquitted 13 other accused in the case as charges brought against them could not be proved, Public Prosecutor Afsarul Islam said.
According to the case statement, there had been a land dispute between the convicts and former UP member Ashraf Ali Dewan, 50, of the village.
As a sequel, the convicts beat up Ashraf with hammer and sticks of June 16 in 2013.
Injured Ashraf died at a private clinic in Dhaka the following day.
On June 19, victim's brother Mansur Ali filed a murder case with Ghior Police Station accusing 25 people.
After investigation, Sub Inspector Hasmat Ali submitted the charge-sheet against 18 people on May 31, 2014.
