3 Faridpur Jubo League men held for assaulting medical officer, nurse at vaccination camp
Police today arrested three Jubo League activists in Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur in a case filed against them for assaulting a medical officer, nurse and an office assistant during the ongoing measles-rubella vaccination programme.
The arrestees are: Alamin Mia (45), Anwar Hossain (47) and Rubel Mia (38), all of residents of the upazila and activists of the upazila unit of Jubo League.
The incident happened at Nagarkanda Upazila Health Complex around 12pm today when a woman brought her daughter for vaccination and the on-duty nurse told her to stand in queue since it was crowded there.
Angered by this, the woman called her brother Alamin over phone, who came there with his two associates – Anwar and Rubel – and 10-12 other activists of Jubo League and Chhatra League and assaulted the nurse, Rekha Khanam.
Jyotirmoy Chowdhury, medical officer of the health complex, tried to stop the attackers and was also beaten up by the miscreants. An office assistant of the complex, Ekhlas Hossain, was also assaulted while trying to record the incident with his mobile phone camera, the medical officer told The Daily Star.
On information, police went to the spot and arrested the trio while the others managed to flee, he added.
Confirming the incident, Sheikh Md Sohel Rana, officer-in-charge of Nagarkanda Police Station, told The Daily Star that a case has been filed against the attackers and legal steps are in place in this connection.
Faridpur District Civil Surgeon Md Siddikur Rahman also confirmed the incident and said he visited the health complex, which is a camp for the ongoing measles-rubella vaccination campaign, after the incident.
