22 officials granted bail
A court here yesterday granted bail to 22 officials, including six retired managing directors (MDs), of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) in Parbatipur upazila in a case over the disappearance of 1.45 lakh tonnes of coal from the mine.
After spending a night in the prison all the 22 officials walked out of Dinajpur jail around 8:45am yesterday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Dinajpur District and Sessions Judge Mahmudul Karim rejected their bail prayer after the accused appeared before it seeking bail.
Nuruzzaman Jahani, defence lawyer, said his clients were denied bail as they failed to submit the relevant documents from the High Court (HC) in time.
The court granted their bail when the defence lawyers submitted the papers around 5:00pm the same evening.
Faridul Rahman, jailer at Dinajpur Jail, said they received the bail certificate around 7:30pm on Wednesday, but according to the provision, jail authorities cannot release any prisoner after the sunset.
On July 24 in 2018, Anisur Rahman, manager (admin) of BCMCL, filed the case with Parbatipur Police Station against 19 officials of the coal mine.
After investigation, the Anti-Corruption Commission pressed charges against 23 BCMCL officials, including seven MDs, over the coal scam.
