DU team decodes genome sequence of Sars-CoV-2
A Dhaka University team has decoded genome sequence of five samples of Sars-CoV-2.
Dr Sharif Akhtaruzzaman, professor of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at DU and chief of the Corona Response Technical Committee of the university, disclosed the development via a press release.
The analysed data has been submitted to Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) and subsequently accepted by the data centre, it added.
Some alumni of DU's biochemistry and molecular biology department have promised to bear the expenses of the initial stage of the decoding 100 samples of viruses.
This sequencing will play a mentionable role in tracing the source of the virus, it's mutation and to develop effective medicine and vaccines.
The sequencing process is going on in laboratories of three departments -- biochemistry and molecular biology, genetic engineering and biotechnology, and microbiology under the biological science faculty and another laboratory of Centre for Advanced Research in Science (CARS).
