World Radio Day: Betar’s role in 1971 recalled
The role Bangladesh Betar played during the country's independence movement is written in golden letters, said Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud yesterday.
"People who listened to Swadhin Bangla Kendra know how their programmes inspired the freedom-loving persons," he told a discussion at Bangladesh Betar in the capital's Agargaon.
Bangladesh Betar organised the discussion and rally marking World Radio Day with the theme "New World New Radio".
State Minister for Information Dr Murad Hasan and Information Secretary Khaja Mia addressed the discussion as special guests with Bangladesh Betar Director General Ahmed Kamruzzaman in the chair.
The minister said Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra had played a major role in nation building activities in the post-independent era.
Radio is also playing a crucial role in nation building activities and many of the programmes have a wide appeal in rural areas, he said.
The minister said radio has also been playing a pivotal role in creating awareness among people during the Cocid-19 situation. He said people now can listen to Bangladesh Betar programmes through apps on mobile phones all over the world.
Murad Hasan said Bangladesh Betar is playing an important role in implementing rights to information and "Digital Bangladesh".
Khaja Mia urged officials of Bangladesh Betar to work devotedly for the welfare of people.
Among others, Principal Information Officer Surath Kumar Sarker, Press Institute of Bangladesh director general Jafar Wazed, Department of Mass Communication director general Bidhan Chandra Karmaker, National Institute of Mass Media director general Shahin Islam and former directors of Betar were present at the programme.
