Two lakh metres of illegal fishing net seized in Barishal
Nearly two lakh metres of illegal fishing nets worth around Tk 65 lakh have been seized from different rivers in Barishal as the authorities started a joint drive to protect jatka yesterday.
Bangladesh Navy, Barishal District Administration and the Department of Fisheries carried out the operation at Lahar Haat in Barishal Sadar, and Sreepur and Veduria points in Mehendiganj upazila from 8am to 12pm.
Lt Commander Shahadat -- stationed at BNS Salam under Navy Commander Flotilla West, Khulna of Bangladesh Navy -- led the operation.
He said they started the "Jatka Killing Prevention Operation" on request of the central office of the fisheries department. As part of it, they raided various rivers in Barishal, he said.
During the operation, 1.8 lakh metres of current nets were recovered from different rivers of Barishal. Of them, 20,000 metres of yarn nets were found in the river Kirtankhola. The illegal fishing nets were later burnt at Charkawa point on the eastern bank of the river, said officials.
Fishermen were using the nets to catch hilsa illegally.
Barishal Fisheries Officer Bimal Chandra Das said the operation to protect jatka (hilsa fry) was being monitored from Dhaka. It will continue until April 30, he said.
