Mamunul’s Confinement in N’ganj: Hefajat activists turn violent across country
Leaders and activists of Hefajat-e-Islam unleashed mayhem at different places across the country following confinement of a top leader of the organisation by ruling Awami League men at a resort in Narayanganj along with a woman on Saturday evening.
Hours after the incident, several hundred Hefajat men vandalised and launched arson attack on different offices and shops in Cox's Bazar's Moheshkhali upazila.
They even tried to attack a Buddhist temple in Kalarmarchhara area of the same upazila, said locals and witnesses.
The violence erupted around 11pm on Saturday and went on till around 1am.
Additional law enforcers have been deployed in the area, said Md Abdul Hai, officer-in-charge of Moheshkhali Police Station.
Meanwhile in Sunamganj, around one thousand Hefajat activists were sued yesterday in connection with attacking Chhatak Police Station on Saturday night and injuring eight policemen.
The police station's sub-inspector Anwar Miah filed the case with the station accusing 98 named and another 800-900 unnamed Hefajat activists, said OC Najim Uddin of the police station.
On Saturday night, several hundred Hefajat supporters brought out a procession in the upazila following a rumour that its Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque was detained by police in Narayanganj.
The activists attacked the police station from the procession, said witnesses.
Of the eight injured policemen, conditions of two are critical and they are undergoing treatment at a hospital, said the OC.
Meanwhile in Kishoreganj, Hefajat men ransacked several offices in Kuliarchar upazila on Saturday night.
Locals said hundreds of Hefajat men from Nazirdighi village brought out a procession after hearing that Mamunul had been confined. They threw brick chunks at the offices of upazila nirbahi officer, assistant commissioner (land) and a public library around 10pm.
On information, police went to the spot and fired five shots to disperse the mob. Police also arrested five persons from the spot, said OC Md Mizanur Rahman of Kuliarchar Police Station. At least 10 people, including five policemen, were injured during the incident, he said.
SI Saddam Hossain of the police station lodged a case in connection with the attack on government offices and police, accusing over 500 people, of whom 30 were named, the OC added.
On Saturday evening, AL men kept Mamunul confined to a resort in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila. They alleged that Mamunul went to a room of the resort with a woman with whom he was having an affair.
On information, police went to the resort. But by the time they arrived, a large number of Hefajat men gathered there, broke the main gate and stormed into the resort. They took Mamunul with them, according to witnesses and locals.
At that time, Hefajat men vandalised the resort and vehicles parked there. They later blocked Dhaka-Chattogram highway, staged demonstrations and vandalised some vehicles.
Meanwhile, a Hefajat activist has filed a complaint with Sonargaon Police Station against some Jubo League and Chhatra League men in connection with "assaulting" Mamunul at the resort, said police.
