Hope of Rucsu polls this year getting stronger

The hope for holding election to Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (Rucsu) by this year is getting stronger as the university authorities are planning to discuss relevant issues with student organisations soon.

Prof Lutfor Rahman, proctor of Rajshahi University (RU), has confirmed the development to this correspondent recently.

The last Rucsu election was held 30 years ago, in 1989. If held this year, it will be Rucsu's 15th election.

While talking to The Daily Star on Thursday, RU Proctor Prof Lutfor said the university's vice chancellor has tasked him and Student Adviser Prof Laila Arjuman Banu to hold discussions with different student bodies of the university.

“We're planning on forming a committee consisting of administrative officials. Then, by next [this] week, we will discuss with different student bodies separately. Then, the final decision about holding the Rucsu polls will be made,” he added.

RU Vice Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan told journalists last week that the authorities are ready to arrange the election to Rucsu, if that is what the students want.

After the Dhaka University authorities recently took necessary steps to hold the long-stalled election to Ducsu (student union of DU) this year, the possibility of the much-demanded Rucsu election this year also came to the fore.

Lately on the RU campus, the Rucsu election has been the one of the primary topics of discussion among student organisations and general students.

Welcoming RU's decision to hold talks with student bodies, Chhatra Union RU unit President Shakil Hossain said now the authorities need to focus on holding the election this year by any means.

Imtiaz Ahmed, president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal's RU unit, said the Rucsu polls should be held immediately for ensuring equal rights of all student organisations.

When asked whether the student organisations are ready for the polls, the general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League at RU, Faisal Ahmed Runu, said, “We are ready for the polls. The authorities may arrange it any time.”

After being founded in 1953, RU organised the first election to its student union, then known as Rajshahi University Students Union, in 1962. The student union was later renamed as Rucsu and its last election was held in 1989.
