Those involved in attacking navy officer won’t be spared: home minister
A case was filed against Erfan Selim, son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Selim, on charge of "attacking" Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy in Dhanmondi area of Dhaka last night.
Lt Wasif filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station last night, naming four accused including Erfan Selim (37) and two to three unnamed persons, Officer-in-Charge of the police station Ikram Ali Miah told The Daily Star. The other three named accused are AB Siddique Dipu (45), Md Zahid (35) and Md Mizanur Rahman (30).
OC (investigation) of Dhanmondi Police Station Ashfaque Rajib Hasan told The Daily Star around 1:45pm that they were conducting a drive at the house of Erfan Selim, a councilor of ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation, in Old Dhaka.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said that none of those involved in attacking the naval officer will be spared.
The minister made the remarks while talking to reporters at his residence in Dhanmondi.
The home minister said, "If anyone commits a crime, he will be punished. No matter who they are or whether they are public representative, everyone has to face the law."
In the case statement, Lt Wasif said a private car hit his motorcycle in Dhanmondi as he and his wife were going to Dhaka Cantonment from Nilkhet around 7:45pm yesterday.
Some people came out of the car and verbally abused him and his wife and left the place.
When the car stopped at a nearby signal, Lt Wasif knocked the window of the car and introduced himself, after which the passengers got off the car again.
They physically attacked Lt Wasif and immediately went away, leaving the car behind, the case statement said.
On duty police rescued Lt Wasif and detained the driver along with the car.
After receiving primary treatment, Lt Wasif was sent to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital.
Deputy Commissioner (Ramna) Sajjadur Rahman, who visited the spot this morning, said police have collected the footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby and are going over them now.
Asked whether they took any measure to arrest the accused, the DC said drives are on to arrest Erfan and other accused.
