AL activists block highway in Ctg

Protesting arrest of its leader on charges of extortion and thuggery, Awami League men yesterday blocked Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway in Patiya upazila for three hours and caused immense sufferings to hundreds of people.

Police arrested Jahangir Alam, 40, the former joint secretary of AL Karnaphuli Police Station unit, yesterday afternoon in Patiya court area. 
Police sources said on May 3, two rival groups of AL clashed over supplying stones to Sikalbaha Power Station, and Jahangir was mastermind of the clash.  

Jahangir was arrested in a case filed with Patiya Police Station in this connection, said Shamim Hossain, assistant superintendent of police, Patiya circle. He faces several other cases for extortion, he added.

Several hundred buses and trucks were seen stuck during the period of the barricade put in Moizzartek area of Patiya. It was removed around 7:40pm by police.
