WE X1 & Smart Solutions

First impressions

The sleek, red box with minimal graphics oozes a little class not common in most local packaging. First impressions matter and WE has got that part covered rather well. Then comes the device itself. First glance it will remind you of a certain fruity device. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and this time it is done well.

Build

The X1 is a 6.15mm thin, full aluminium bodied unit with rounded corners and very minimal logo work on the rear. The top is a 5.0” HD AMOLED display with soft rounded glass edges. There are two white plastic strips on the rear top and bottom that are design elements that need not have been there because these eventually get scratched up. But the rest of the design is solid and classy.

The 720*1280, 294PPI display is sharp enough for regular viewing but the very small icons can have noticeable jagged edges. Colours are on the right side of vibrancy with the automatic brightness control working properly all the time.

Hardware

There is plenty of juice packed into that slim body. Power is from 1.2GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset backed up by 2GB RAM. The 64-bit processor would have been better served with an updated OS. I wonder when WE will address that required update. It comes with 4.4.4 KitKat and a familiar interface called Fine UI that successfully manages to merge iOS looks and Android functionality. While most users won't notice any difference in using KitKat, a newer Android would definitely be able to better utilise that hardware combo.

The Adreno 306 is a capable GPU for most available games with a major chunk spent trundling through unforgiving terrain with SUVs in Off-road Driving 2016. 3D games are mostly rendered with smooth framerates although the device will warm up a bit.

Storage and call:

There is 16GB available memory and WE's proprietary 100GB cloud service. The sound quality is excellent and loud enough to hear clearly in crowded situations.

Camera

The 13MP back unit takes very good photos even at slightly low light. Just make sure it's not a lot of moving subjects. Colours are a little on the bright side but detail is sharp. An 8MP front unit does a good job capturing a lot of detail and has a neat timer function with display numbers so you don't have to fiddle with the shutter button for those all-important selfies. Bottom-line: the cameras will easily take care of all your social media needs.

Battery

The 2000mAh battery may not seem like a lot, but the device managed to run an entire day of regular usage that involves gaming, social media activity while always being connected via Wi-Fi or mobile data.

VERDICT
It's a great looking phone with a sharp display.  The sleekness makes it a little slippery but it's a price you pay for style points. Easy to carry, easy to slip into a pocket, the X1 wins on style points. It packs decent hardware that will serve most people for most purposes coupled with a slick, lag-free user interface. Just one gripe: it has a dated version of Android.
