Abuse of diplomatic privileges: Luxury car seized in Dhaka

Customs officials today seized a luxury vehicle as what they said it was brought into the country by abusing diplomatic privileges.

The vehicle, bearing a registration plate no. Dhaka Metro Bha 11-1625, was handed over illegally to Mahbubur Rahman, an employee at The Czech Republic Consulate in Dhaka, after it was brought in the country misusing diplomatic privileges, Moinul Khan, director general of CIID, told The Daily Star.

Acting on a tip-off, the car (saloon) -- JAGUAR 2002 -- was recovered on December 30 last year by a team of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) from a house in Pink City, a housing complex on the eastern outskirts of Dhaka,

The team led by Imam Gazzali, assistant director of CIID, temporarily seized the car after discovering it in the garage of the building named Xenovalley on December 30, 2016, he said.

Mahbubur Rahman is the late husband of a resident of the house Tania Rahman, he added.

Total amount of tax against the car, brought under duty-free quota, is Tk 23,82,888.47 while its actual worth is Tk 15,85,421.48, CIID said.
