Internet bandwidth usage rises 513 times in 14 years: BTRC chairman
Bandwidth use increased by 513 times in the country in the last 14 years, said Shyam Sunder Sikder, chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
"International internet bandwidth usage in the country was 7.5 Gbps in 2008, which hit 3,850 Gbps in May 2022," he said.
Sikder shared the information at an event to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today.
The day was celebrated worldwide on May 17.
The theme of this year's World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022 was "Digital Technologies for Older persons and Healthy Aging".
"The elderly people in Bangladesh are using low number of internet services than their counterparts in other countries of the world and they are lagging behind in terms of inclusion in digital technology."
The BTRC chairman urged the government, telecommunication and digital service providers, academia and all concerned to come forward and take necessary steps to ensure healthy aging and improved digital life of the elderly using digital technology.
Despite the stunning rise of internet usage, Bangladesh will not face any bandwidth crisis, said Mustafa Jabbar, telecom minister.
Bangladesh will be added to the third submarine cable by 2025, he said.
The minister urged the operators to provide customers with quality 4G services.
Md Khalilur Rahman, secretary to the posts and telecommunications division; Md Rafiqul Matin, managing director of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd; Brig Gen Md Nasim Parvez, director general at Systems and Services Division at the BTRC, also spoke.
