Implement policies efficiently for green growth: experts at PRI, World Bank event
It is necessary to formulate a plan for environment-friendly development in the country and take appropriate and effective steps to implement those plans, analysts said at a webinar today.
According to the 17 objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals, the development process of the country will not only be economical, but it must also be socially and environmentally based on green technology, they said at the discussion on "Building back a greener Bangladesh".
The Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) organised the programme in collaboration with the World Bank Group.
Addressing the programme, Ainun Nishat, professor emeritus of Brac University, said several master plans, policies and strategies, including Eighth Five-Year Plan, Delta Plan, Mujib Climate Change Prosperity Plan, have already been formulated for the country's development environmentally.
"But, those are planned and implemented more traditionally. That is why we have to pay close attention to the implementation of the projects. They need to be held accountable and transparent. Moreover, we have to be careful enough in choosing technology," he said.
Speakers said Bangladesh's economy should be developed socially and environmentally, and all parameters must be included in future development plans.
Besides, the models of developed countries should not be copied and Bangladesh needs to look at its own approach for green development, they said.
