213 unauthorised handsets seized from a Mirpur market
About 213 unauthorised mobile handsets were seized from Mirpur-2 area of the capital today.
A joint operation by the Enforcement and Inspection Team of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-4) confiscated the handsets from eight shops at Mirpur Shopping Complex.
During the drive, RAB also arrested six persons from these shops.
The detainees had been in the business of unauthorised mobile handsets for a long time, the BTRC said in a statement.
Legal action is being taken against them as per telecom act, the statement added.
As per law, handsets can be assembled locally or imported after paying taxes. However, handsets are also being brought into the country illegally through tax evasion.
To verify the legality of a mobile phone, a customer has to send a message typing "KYD" then a space and then the 15-digit IMEI number of the handset.
The customer has to send the message to 16002. The return message will tell whether the mobile phone is valid or illegal.
