A woman died and her six-year-old son sustained critical injuries as a car hit them while they were crossing the road in Dhaka's Gulshan area early today.
The deceased was identified as Shahinur Akter, 36, mother of two. Her elder son Shanto is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The accident occurred when the woman along with her husband and two sons was crossing the road around 12:30am. Shahinur was holding the hand of Shanto when they were hit by a car. Her husband Abdus Sattar was carrying their three-year-old son Sakib. The father and the three-year-old were unhurt as they were a little ahead, police and family members said.
Critically injured, the mother and the son were rushed to DMCH where doctors declared Shahinur dead around 1:30am, said Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station.
Police are trying to identify the vehicle, he said.
