Illegally-recruited staffers at RU lock buildings, finance committee meeting suspended
Many of the 137 unlawfully recruited staffers at Rajshahi University locked university's administrative buildings, senate building and vice chancellor's residence today in order to stop finance committee meeting from being held.
Later, the university administration suspended the meeting which was scheduled to take place at 10:30am, reports our university correspondent quoting sources.
Around 9:20am, some 30 former and current Chhatra league leaders of the university, who were illegally recruited by former Rajshahi University vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan on his last day in office on May 6, locked two administrative buildings, senate building and VC's residence.
They also met RU acting VC Prof Ananda Kumar Saha at his residence for discussion around 9:50am and demanded to allow them to join their posts.
Former BCL leader Atiqur Rahman Sumon said, the finance committee meeting was scheduled to be held today and a syndicate meeting will be held on June 22.
"As we have heard, the syndicate meeting will recommend cancelation of our recruitment. That is why we locked the buildings to stop the finance committee and syndicate meetings," he said.
RU proctor Liakat Ali said, the administration has already suspended the finance committee meeting in face of the situation following which the demonstrators promised to open the gates soon.
Acting VC Prof Ananda Kumar Saha told journalists, "As we are at the end of the financial year, it was necessary to hold today's meeting. However, the meeting has been suspended due to unavoidable reasons."
"I have been hearing for a few days that such incidents may happen. So, we informed the matter to the Motihar Police Station. Local political leaders in Rajshahi are also aware of the issue. I will talk to concerned authorities again, then necessary action will be taken," he added.
On his last day in office on May 6, Prof Sobhan recruited at least 137 staffers, including nine teachers, giving rise to protests on the campus. The education ministry termed the recruitment illegal on the same day and initiated an investigation. On May 8, the RU administration suspended the recruitment process.
