Motorcyclist Murder: Police are yet to find leads
Around after 48 hours, the police were yet to find any clue about who killed a motorcyclist on the capital’s Malibagh flyover early Monday.
They also don’t know whether there were one or more attackers.
Four people, however, have been detained for interrogation in the killing of the biker, Milon Sheikh, 35.
Milon, who used to work for different ride-sharing services, was not using any application while providing the service that night and the spot is also not covered by any CCTV cameras. These issues are making it difficult to trace the killers, claimed investigators.
Around 2:15am on Monday, Milon was on his way to Shantinagar after picking up a passenger from Rampura. When they reached the middle of the Malibagh flyover, unidentified people slit Milon’s throat with a sharp weapon, according to the case filed by victim’s wife Shilpi Begum.
With his hand pressed on the wound, Milon managed to run to Shantinagar where two pedestrians rescued him and took him to patrol police.
He later died in hospital around 5:45am. The injury on Milon’s throat was five-inch wide and two-and-half-inch deep, morgue sources said.
As of filing this report at 2:00am today, police were yet to have any leads in the case.
Earlier yesterday, Atikur Rahman, a sub-inspector of Shahjahanpur Police Station, told The Daily Star that they have detained four people after analysing the victim’s cell phone call list.
“We have got some information after interrogating the detainees and are hopeful about arresting whoever is responsible,” said Atikur, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case.
There are CCTV cameras at the entry and exit points of the flyover but no camera covered the spot where Milon was killed, said the IO.
“But we are checking the footages to get clues.”
“We often used to patrol the flyover at night and sometimes found pedestrians walking there. We are also trying to find out whether anyone killed him after putting up a barrier on the flyover,” he said.
Besides, police are also doing a background check on Milon’s personal and family life to see if there was anyone who he may have had enmity with, Atikur added.
Anowar Hossain, deputy commissioner of Motijheel division police, said their several teams are investigating the case and they are hopeful about arresting whoever killed Milon.
Hailing from Bhola, Milon used to live with his wife Shilpi and two children -- Minhaj, 10, and Sadia, 6 -- in a rented flat in Gudaraghat area of Mirpur.
Visiting the flat yesterday afternoon, this correspondent found his wife Shilpi and other family members mourning his death.
Milon’s father Abul Kalam Sheikh, a rickshaw puller, said they came to Dhaka in 2001 after losing their house to river erosion. Milon worked as rickshaw puller for a couple of years and then as the driver of a human haulier.
In 2017, he bought a private car with Tk 3.5 lakh and used to work for a car renting company. He sold the car more than a year ago due to low pay and began working for a ride-sharing service provider after buying a motorbike, he said.
“Milon struggled a lot with daily expenditures to bring happiness to me and our family,” the victim’s wife Shilpi said.
He would usually go out of home around 9:00am and come back by 9:00pm. Just before Eid, he started going out of home at 10:00pm and coming back at 9:00am, she added.
Beside working for ride-sharing applications, Milon, an aspiring actor, also made videos for a YouTube channel as a performing artist, said Shilpi. “Milon was supposed to act in a television drama of a private channel in October.”
“I have no alternative support for our livelihood and I do not know how I will survive with my two children.”
Sheikh Md Masud Rana, the owner of the YouTube channel, said that he used to pay Milon from Tk 4,000-8,000 for the performance videos where he used to act.
Milon was buried at the Mirpur Buddhijibi graveyard, half an hour away from his home, on Monday evening.
