Bapex revives Begumganj Gas Field well
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (Bapex) expects to produce gas from the third well of Begumganj Gas Field in Noakhali, officials said.
“The well holds gas and its production is commercially viable,” Tofayel Uddin Sikder, project director of the Begumganj Gas Field, told The Daily Star yesterday.
He, however, declined to give the exact amount of gas that could be produced from the well.
Production from the field commenced in March 2015, but it ceased in July 2016, according to Petrobangla, which owns Bapex. Gas flow drop caused the suspension.
Tofayel led a team to repair, develop and revive the well.
The team opened a new zone, he said. The drilling steam test, a method to determine extractable reserve, was completed, said Tofayel, adding that he had not received the test report yet.
Commercially extractable gas was found at a depth between 1,926 and 1,941 metres.
On June 5 and 6, the flow pressure of gas field was recorded and the record was sent to higher authorities. A foreign firm also confirmed the existence of commercially extractable gas, officials said.
Production could start next month, Tofayel said.
The gas will be supplied through state-run Bakhrabad Gas Field and is expected to alleviate the existing gas crisis in Noakhali, Feni and Laxmipur.
At the field, there is a processing plant with a capacity of 30 million cubic feet of gas per day. The field is connected to the Bakhrabad Gas Field through a pipeline.
Discovered in 1977 by Bapex, Begumganj Gas Field had recoverable gas reserves of 70 billion cubic feet of gas per day. About 0.88 billion cubic feet was extracted until production was suspended.
