'The Oriental-Open Call' under way
Abinta Gallery of Fine Arts joining hands with Oriental Painting Study Group (OPSG) has organised the 8th Oriental Painting Exhibition at Abinta Gallery in Dhaka. The exhibition titled The Oriental will commence on 22 July. Oriental artists including the teachers, students and alumni of different universities together with non-academic and self-taught artists aged above 18 can submit their artworks for the open call.
The participants must submit their artworks including watercolour, wash painting, gouache, fresco, tempera, acrylic, calligraphy and miniature painting based on the basic principles or the core codes like subjects, media and techniques of oriental art. The jury board will select the artworks for display while Abinta Gallery will present three awards to the best works on display.
“We, by birth, inherit the aesthetic sense and thoughts revolving around the oriental way of life. The artworks, to be displayed at the exhibition, are reflective of that sense and thoughts. The purpose of holding the exhibition is to inspire both artists and art connoisseurs in searching their cultural roots and to nurture the art heritage of our own rather than indulging in the Western art trend,” says Dr Malay Bala, also the curator of OPSG. “Japanese art theorist and critic Okakura formulated three pillars – nature, tradition and originality– in pursuing oriental art. Founded in 2009, OPSG has evolved to open up a new horizon of oriental painting in Bangladesh though holding regular exhibitions, workshops and seminars.”
OPSG has also organised a nine day (June 22-30) Oriental Painting Workshop at the Lecture Theatre of the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, daily from 10am to 5pm. Renowned and promising artists – Professor Dr Abdus Satter, Dr Malay Bala, Swapan Das (India), Amit Nandi, Zahangir Alom and others are conducting the workshop.
