Film to be made on ‘Friend of Bengalis’ Father Marino Rigon
Father Marino Rigon was called the ‘Friend of Bengalis’, for his unconditional love and support towards Bangladesh. He moved to Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War, where he gave shelter and cared for the injured.
He was honoured as a freedom fighter of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War for his contributions during the war. He lived in Bangladesh as a missionary for sixty years, preaching the Gospel among Catholics, using the Bengali language and making a tremendous contribution to the Catholic Church of Bangladesh. He breathed his last at the age of 92, and left his well-wishers in October 2017.
The film, The Father- An Untold Story, is a joint venture of Bangladesh and Italy. The feature film will be directed by Hemanta Sadeeq and scripted by Shahaduzzaman.
The shooting of the movie will take place in Venice and Vicenza, Italy. It will commence from this year.
Father Rigon translated 50 Bangladeshi literary pieces into the Italian language. He also translated 350 songs of Lalon. “His selfless contribution towards Bangladesh and our culture, is the first factor that attracted me to take up this project,” says Hemanta Sadeeq. “I believe his story is very relevant to us and our culture. We cannot thank him enough for his unconditional support.”
Father Marino Rigon was conferred honourary citizenship of Bangladesh by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for his tireless and exemplary contributions to society, especially in the country, In 2009.
